Pappare, a cool modern café in the center of Bologna

Bologna’s gastronomic scene has grown at an impressive pace. The traditional cafés and restaurants are an essential part of the city, but lately, I’ve noticed new exciting ideas popping up. One of them is Pappare, a cool café open last year, right under the Two Towers.

Despite the cute Northern European style, menu and reception are Italian as its best. The coffee – by the way, very well done – costs 10% more than in traditional bars from the city center. Yet, considering it has free internet and no extra fee for sitting on the table, it’s certainly worthy.

For breakfast, thousand delicious treats are on the display: most of them are sweet pastries, as the Italian breakfast is more sugary. Amongst few savory options, croissant sandwiches filled with cheese, local ham – don’t forget, Bologna is the hometown of mortadella – and salad. Also in the “colazione” menu, served between 7h and 12h, waffles, toasts, pancakes, cereals and a pretty good English breakfast.

At lunch time, there’s always an option of soup, salad or vegetarian dish. I had the chance to be there in the afternoon and I tried a tea blend and a fabulous cookie.

On the weekends, a brunch is served from 9h to 15h, including all options of a classic breakfast. Some other things, such as burritos with avocado cream and chicken stripes on teriyaki sauce are also on the menu. That said, it’s impossible not to notice that healthy and vegan meals are here to stay. Bologna is not always la grassa.
